Early on Tuesday morning, August 4, 2026, “Joseph” and two companions were taken by ICE officers on Northampton Boulevard in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Joseph is a contractor. He was pulled over in a pickup truck, and his wife, “Maria,” found out about the arrest when someone sent her this Facebook video of the arrest.

I found out this evening, Thursday, August 6, 2026, that Joseph has been transferred to Louisiana. I think that’s barbaric, and my wife, Christin, and I have decided to start a GoFundMe to help Maria and her family. In the interest of full transparency, the fundraiser is in my wife’s name, and she will be administering the fundraiser to protect Maria and her family’s identity.
Since Joseph is facing imminent deportation to Honduras, I’m publishing this introduction to the transcript below, and I will produce a video version of the interview later. It’s going to take me some time to figure out the video editing process, especially since it’s in a language I don’t understand very well.
I’m blaming any bad Spanish-to-English translations in the transcript below on ChatGPT. Any really bad Spanish is on me, likely when I asked my questions in Spanish. I watched the video again, and yes, I really did say vino instead of vivo. In my defense, I’m old, and I studied Spanish a long time ago. After the interview was over, I was braindead, and I left those notes in for posterity.
I know the transcript isn’t perfect, but I want to get Maria and Joseph’s story out there quickly. ICE is making a mockery of due process by flying Joseph halfway across the country to prevent his family from visiting him, so I don’t want to let a few mistranslated words stop the story from being told.
Since I was interviewing someone in a language I didn’t speak and we didn’t have a translator, I gave Maria a list of questions in English, translated into Spanish. I know this isn’t proper journalistic etiquette, but I thought it was appropriate under the circumstances.
After ChatGPT translates this introduction into Spanish, the transcript is below. It starts with me asking the question in English, usually forgetting to ask the question in Spanish, then butchering the Spanish pronunciation. By the time it was over, I’d forgotten what 13 was in Spanish.
